The 19th European PLACE Conference takes place in the Bavarian metropolis of Munich in the south of Germany.
Situated right in the heart of Europe, Munich is a cosmopolitan, international city whose metropolitan region embraces 27 districts and six independent cities. Nearly all German and European cities are within fast, easy reach.
With its broad, flat banks and spacious riverside meadows, the river Isar is a blue lifeline where you can stroll, paddle and cycle to your heart‘s content. Countless extensive parklands make the whole city a green oasis: the Olympic Park, Westpark, Nymphenburg Park and Hellabrunn Zoo to name but a few. First among equals, however, is unquestionably the English Garden! Germany’s largest urban park enchants locals and tourists alike with its picturesque streams, lakes and meadows, not to mention its cafés and beer gardens. Relax over a mug of beer or an apple spritzer under blossoming chestnut trees and experience pure joie de vivre! Eisbach surfing is a world-famous attraction too: All year round, ambitious board artists balance atop the ultimate standing wave.
Munich’s surroundings are equally legendary. The charming Alpine landscape is full of wonderful opportunities for hiking, climbing or biking in clean air and the great outdoors. Lake Starnberg and Lake Ammersee, wildlife and bird sanctuaries plus a multitude of attractions and natural beauty spots have something to delight literally everyone.
Munich is the most livable city in Germany – and for many it is also the most lovable. The lifestyle magazine Monocle put Munich at the top of its ranking of cities with the highest quality of life and the New York Times also loves this „picture-postcard city“. It is true: Choose any measure – the economy, education, infrastructure, public safety, culture or the quality of life – in all of these Munich is a real champion.
Nymphenburg Palace was the summer residence of the Wittelsbach family for centuries. The baroque palace with its 180 hectare park is located in the west of Munich in the Neuhausen-Nymphenburg district. Together with the Nymphenburg Palace Park, the four park castles and the palace rondel, it forms an ensemble. Nymphenburg Palace is one of the great royal palaces in Europe and is a popular sight. The Chinese Tower, initially known as the Great Pagoda, is a 25-meter-high wooden structure in the style of a Chinese pagoda, which is located in the English Garden in Munich. A beer garden has been located at the Chinese Tower since 1974. With 7,000 seats, it is the second largest beer garden in Munich after the Hirschgarten. © München Tourismus, Tommy Lösch 
The Stachus, officially Karlsplatz, is a square in the center of Munich. It is surrounded in a semicircle by the neo-baroque Stachus roundabout, which was built from 1899–1901 according to plans by Gabriel von Seidl. Stachus is the slang term for Karlsplatz. The name comes from an innkeeper by the name of Eustachius Föderl, who has been running an inn called Stachusgarten on this site since 1755 in the area of today’s Kaufhof. The Viktualienmarkt is a permanent market for food in the old town of Munich. It has taken place every day since 1807, except on Sundays and public holidays. The appearance of the over two hectare site is characterized by fixed stalls, some with large displays. There are also some seasonally different flying stands. The Olympic Park in Munich was the venue for the XX. Olympic Games 1972 and is located on the Oberwiesenfeld area. To this day it is a venue for sporting events as well as a venue for cultural, social or church services. The Olympiapark is managed by Olympiapark München GmbH, a wholly owned subsidiary of the City of Munich. By November 2015, over 11,500 events with more than 200 million visitors had taken place in the 85-hectare park. Since the 1972 Summer Games, the buildings in the Olympic Park have hosted 31 world championships, 12 European championships and almost 100 German championships. The Eisbach as the left branch of the Isar is the strongest brook in the English Garden in Munich. A stone step at the exit point on Prinzregentenstrasse of the very water-rich and fast-flowing Eisbach creates a rapids and a standing wave about half a meter high, which is used by canoeists and river surfers and has also become internationally known among surfers.
